In 2004, the sequel to Resident Evil came out. Resident Evil: Apocalypse details the events of the zombie outbreak in Raccoon City after Alice and the security team enter the Hive, the research facility beneath Raccoon City.
Here we meet Jill Valentine, a badass S.T.A.R.S. officer that is only half as badass as she was in the games. She knows what is going on, which is never explained. Her efforts are vastly important as a new team is formed around Alice, who receives a mysterious phone call offering a way out of the city in exchange for a simple rescue mission. All of which would be insane enough were it not for the Nemesis hunting down targets of interest in the chaos, including S.T.A.R.S. and "Project Alice."
We also meet Carlos, a soldier working for Umbrella. He was in the game RE3, playable for a time, and his role in this movie is more or less the same.
This movie was fun. The characters were likeable, their conflicts and struggles made sense. They were on a mission to survive. The budget was huge compared to the first movie, and herein lies the first problem in my opinion. The fight scene choreography exploded, seeming outrageous and overdone. Every fight seemed like it had to include a slo-mo scene and a ridiculous action pose for some reason. I always found that to be distracting.
Overall, a good movie… if you haven't played RE3.
