Welcome back, everyone. Monday I reviewed Hearts in Atlantis by Stephen King, author of dozens of great horror and mystery novels. Today I'm reviewing the movie adaptation of Hearts in Atlantis from 2001, starring Anthony Hopkins.
Legitimately, I was leery when I first realized that this was the Anthony Hopkins film. To me, Anthony Hopkins is Hannibal. Anthony Hopkins is the doctor from Westworld. Ted Brautigan felt too… pleasant? Anthony Hopkins is one of my favorite actors, and I think it is due to his masterfully suspenseful "good doctor gone homicidal" success that he has enjoyed. However, this movie reassured me. Everything the man touches is gold.
This adaptation fit the book really well. The big events remained intact and even in order. There was some minimization in the violence, probably to keep a lower rating. No animals came to harm, in book or movie. Anthony Hopkins killed his role, Bobby Garfield's mother also nailed it. Super good movie, definitely worth a watch. I bought the dvd to watch it, there's a link below.
