Lee Mountford released The Mark the year after The Demonic, and I noticed a massive difference in his writing. Kudos. The dialogue was much improved, and the story was darker. More violent. Frankly, more frightening.
One night, Kirsti Thompson leaves the bar and goes home, only to be attacked and drugged in the middle of the night. She comes to the next morning with the taste of blood in her mouth and an intricate symbol cut into the flesh of her back. While all of that is bad enough, she begins to see impossible, gruesome things… Dismembered spectres, and a shadowy figure watching her…
The book plays like a movie. The author, Lee Mountford, did a great job capturing the most horrific ideas from the horror movies. Subtle changes, shifts in occurrence. The like. Sinister smiles. I had a blast trapped in the page-turning loop.
Like I said, there is a world of difference between the writing in The Mark as opposed to The Demonic. The Mark, while having some subtle nods toward the previous work, was much better written. The pace was better, and yet still fast. The violence and gore was absorbing, like watching a train derailment.
I will say, I noted a lot of typos that I recognize from my own writing. Scraped becomes scrapped, movement is accidentally shortened to moment. These things happen.
I would recommend this book. I had a great time with it. Not a long time, but a memorable one.
