Hey there, coffee folks and word junkies. Frizzy J here with another spooky tale from Rob E. Boley. Published in 2017, Mr. Shady is a short book about the unimaginable suffering that ghosts endure. On these pages, darkened by Boley's good work, we find the most mundane of things, like rain and grass, to be utter torture to the lost souls of the dead.
Molly died and went to stand in an endless line outside a vibrant, blinding light (one that no longer functions as an astral portal) for almost three days before a Ouija board summoned her back to the place where she had perished. Another girl had died in that car accident, and that girl's friend sought to commune with her. Now the pair wander the earth as darkness closes in around them, seeking to enslave them.
I thought this book was very engaging. I fell into it, reading it in less than six hours. The characters were believable, even though sometimes I felt that their dialogue was a bit off. The world and its rules was hypnotically intriguing, and the situations the characters were thrust into were appropriately harrowing. I found that the environment was much more frightening than the antagonist, Mr. Shady, however. I also questioned Mr. Shady's motives. I knew what he wanted, but I was fuzzy on the endgame.
Overall, I'd call this a worthwhile, fun, quick read from the author of The Body Will Follow. It was a bit more lighthearted, in some ways, than The Body Will Follow, though.
